Is the Asus RT-N12 the best budget router? $50 is budget

My parents need/want a new router and I'm planning to get one for them. I'm not really looking to spend more than $50 as they don't do heavy downloading or host servers, stream media/files, etc.

I was looking at the Asus RT-N12 as it has dual antennas and seems to have good reviews but I'm not sure if there is better around that price range (~$40)? Also, would I need to install 3rd party firmware such as DD-WRT/Tomato on it for it to be stable/perform well? I ask because I don't live anywhere near my parents and they would never be able to do it.

Thanks!

i use the rt-n16 and it is really good, but about twice the cost. the rt-n12 is reviewed well, but no personal experience

i would setup tomato w/VPN (i use www.tomatousb.org build as the stock tomato doesn't have VPN) so that i could troubleshoot computers behind the router without opening ports, but that's just me
