Japanese Nostalgic Car opened a "Touge 80s" to any model introduced in the 1980s, and I submitted my 300ZX (despite being a 1992, the Z32 debuted in 1989). They accepted me on 10/10.

Then I had to get to work, because my shitty Falkens were too damned old, and were separating between the tread blocks.

New tires (Nitto NT555 Ext, 235/45R17 front and 275/40R17 rear)

Then I realized that the gold BBSs needed some attention.

I looked around locally, but everywhere wanted between $200 and $300 per wheel to refinish them. OMGFiguring, "how hard can it be", I disassembled them (they are 3 piece):

First, I got a shitload of chemicals. OMGThe cashier looked at me funny when I showed up with a gallon each of aircraft remover, denatured alcohol, xylene, lacquer thinner, and acetone, so I held eye contact for just long enough for things to get awkward, and said, "I know how to party".

I stripped the rims of clear and filed the curb rash off, then polished them:

Then I stripped the centers of color and clear (using aircraft remover, then scotchbrite, then rags with lacquer thinner, God do my fingers hurt):

Then I got a powder coating setup (a single voltage gun by Eastwood, an oven that I found on the side of the road, a wardrobe box, a box fan, and a furnace filter). OMGThe gold is gold powder, and the white cures clear (also, insert cocaine joke here):

Final product:

Wow. The wheels came out great. That aircraft stripper is some serious shit. Have fun with those 555's. I was never a fan of them from rears. They don't hook for shit.

I'm not turning the boost way up for my trip down to sea level, so I think I'm safe. It's a rally for '80s cars after all, how much power do they really make over the long haul anyway?

They felt really good after my Ziex 512s or w/e I had on there before.

I didn't know it was supposed to be a special thing until all the gun nuts started complimenting me on my choice of powder.

I just ordered it from prismaticpowders.com, because they had the best color match that I could find.

I guess it's somewhat different from your standard powdercoat because it deals in polyester and epoxy-based powder coats (though don't touch those with acetone or MEK).

Back from the Touge.

The car, a 1992 Nissan 300ZX (Z32), accepted because the model debuted in 1989:

The drivers:
While I didn't have time to get a costume together, my co-driver put on his best Bret Michaels.

Picture of an R32 taking a picture of a Z32, taken from a Z32!

R32, S12, Z32, CRX

Z32 and 50th Anniversary Edition Z31 300ZX, a car that definitely had me beat in the Xzibit sense of "hey bro, we heard you like louvers" department.

Only issue I had was a lean misfire at speed (from about 65 MPH on up). I theorized that it could have something to do with turbulent air hitting the mass airflow sensor, based on the readings of my wideband O2 sensor and the fact that it didn't happen when we were in the lee of a larger object (like say a semi truck).

So, we stopped in Kingman, AZ and did a little modification:

I bought a small flower pot, some fender washers, and a 1/4-20 nut at the Home Depot to make a shroud for the air filter. It stopped the sporadic lean condition and we could drive as fast as we wanted, when we wanted to.

Had an issue with the PCV pickup point, as it's low on the DS exhaust valve cover, so I'm removing them in favor of a breather can.

First step was to powdercoat my valve covers, remove the old pickups, and tap the holes for plugs (3/8" NPT), then drill and tap new pickup points on the intake valve covers at the highest point, and thread them for 3/8 to -6AN fittings.

Oh, and the issue is that I keep blowing out the dipstick.

It's not blowby, at sea level the car idles at -72 kpa (so, 21.2") of vacuum, which wouldn't be the case if it were bad rings. At altitude it idles at -58 to -60 kpa

The stock PCV system tends to clog up, both because of the low pickups from the valve covers, and because the valves themselves hang off the bottom of the plenum (so the oil can pool over the valves). I'm pretty sure one was jammed partially open, so it was pressurizing the crankcase.
