It's a VAG product - of course that's a thing that happens.

How are you measuring the boost as well?

it has a gauge mounted in the middle of the dashboard, above the stereo controls... the backlighting on the gauge is red, I assumed it was stock

I might be heading over there later today, I'll snap some pictures if anyone cares. It's a 2001 S4

Friend says that he removed and retightened some kind of valve that he said may have been the "leak" point but the problem is not resolved...

It's a touchy situation, I did all I could to warn him not to buy it. But he ignored me, all I really had was "You're buying a broken, used German sports car for $4500? Why do you think it's so cheap?" His response was "Because people are upgrading to the V8 S4!! "

He did zero research, the car will probably last for this snow season and then he'll have two "project cars" with blown motors.

Those look like compressor bypass valves. Note that there is a second one on the other side.

Yup. and the stock ones have a tendency to rip the diaphragm inside.

Those are aftermarket. They were just designed to look like OEM equipment.

Yeah it's a "VDO" gauge, and after seeing it in daylight it is crammed in between the AC vents with some kind of hideous ill-fitting chinese plastic housing...

Continues to only reach ~51/2-61/2 PSI, friend is confident that he can tackle the turbo swap himself so that's good I guess.

universal lip spoiler was torn off shortly after taking these pictures, and he's in the process of repainting the wheels and calipers. The front wheel is covered in original ricer paint, has some kind of odd metallic gold flake in it, the rear is friends' repaint, and you can kind of see the vinyl work he did on the center cap

also

BAMM

painted my car

before krylon

after krylon
