Is it going to be a remake of Net Diaspora from way back in the day??? I played the hell out of that game.

Edit: over excited post. Followed link, not a remake of the old Diaspora.

Nope, it's pretty much what I said it is, an updated/reimagined BTRL. Interestingly enough, the Diaspora team actually worked on BSG Online as well:

As Bigpoint's Battlestar Galactica game is now in open beta testing the team would like to make an official statement about it.

The Diaspora team have never considered Bigpoint's game to a rival to ours. Both games have very different styles and therefore are aimed at fairly different markets. We know exactly how hard it is to make a BSG game and we want to wish them every success with theirs.

That said, we do actually have a vested interest. Several months ago the Diaspora team was approached by the producer of Battlestar Galactica Online with an offer. In order to speed up the development of their game they were interested in hiring freelance 3D artists to make models for them. And where might you go if you were looking for 3D artists familiar with making game models for a Battlestar Galactica based game?

Yep, us.

As a result, after signing some NDAs, DaBrain, Lt Cannonfodder and Newman have all been freelancing the last few months to make a reasonable portion of the Rag Tag Fleet for Bigpoint's game. This hasn't slowed down Diaspora any and in fact has helped as our modellers have basically been paid to familiarise themselves intimately with ships they'll later be putting into the game anyway. Expect to see future posts in the Dev Blog as they start modelling the Diaspora versions of the ships they created for Bigpoint.

Interesting stuff. So far no space game I've seen or played even comes close to Eve Online, so it kind of spoiled it for me. They may be fun to play with for awhile, but nothing keeps you interested like the completely player created world of Eve, or the intuitive piloting system. I know some people didn't like it, but once used to it, you see that it gives you tons of control over your piloting while leaving you time to manage your weapons and other systems.

Also piloting a space ship like an airplane feels weird. Isnt it much more likely that a piloting system like eve (you target something, be it an enemy ship or a friendly space station, and then you can warp to it, orbit it, hold position from it, ect) would be used in space? Manual piloting when things you might need to maneuver around are like, millions of miles apart seems pointless. Id rather target something and hit "orbit at 20km", then have time to plan out my combat strategy, vs spending all my time just maintaining a 20km orbit manually, eew.

I mean sure that kind of piloting wouldnt work in an atmosphere, theres not nearly enough room. In space tho? Once the initial fun of flying a space ship wears off, youll be wishing you had an eve autopiloting system to use heh.

ALL IMO OFC
