Buy Portal 2 on PS3 and you can play it on Steam

Quote:
If you play Portal 2 on PS3, you can play with people on a PC. Neat! And to make sure as many people as possible are doing just that, the PS3 version of the game will include the PC version.

All players have to do once they get the game is link their PlayStation Network and Steam accounts. Once that's done, they'll have a Steam Play (so, PC and/or Mac) version of the game ready to download in their library list.

This cross-platform play even extends to giving PS3 users the ability to chat to PC gamers, and vice-versa. Oh, and PS3 users can even save their game in the Steam Cloud, meaning Valve has them tucked away in their servers in case something ever goes horribly wrong with your PS3.

That's a whole lot of "firsts" for both Steam, the PC multiplayer service of choice, and Sony's PlayStation Network. Not to mention a free copy of the game you can, for example, take with you on a laptop when you're not on your couch with the PS3.

And if all this works, and works well, let us welcome out glorious cross-platform future with open arms!

PS3/PC/Mac version of Portal 2 can all be played together, can chat together, and use the cloud for saves. If you buy Portal 2 on PS3, just link your PSN and Steam accounts and you can play your copy of Portal 2 on PC/Mac. You buy one copy that can be played on multiple platforms.

Doug Lombardi expands on it:
Quote:
“Sony just seems really open to the idea,” he told us last week. “People at [publisher] EA introduced us to some people at Sony and we were like, ‘It would be really cool if we could do something with Steam and they were like, ‘Do it!’

“Just working with them in general has been very easy going. I think they see having an open platform console as a strategic advantage for them, and so they’re running with it.”

Wow... that's really awesome.

It's no wonder Valve changed changed their view on the PS3, Microsoft doesn't want anything of the sort happening.

edit: it's gonna be to be a bit pricier for me to not just get the PS3 version (even if I dont have a PS3 yet ;P )

MS tried to do something like this about 3-4 years ago, Shadowrun
it didn't work well for several reasons
also, Quake III for Dreamcast did this, with more success than Shadowrun

Those games only did cross-platform play (some PS2 games like NFSUnderground also did cross-platform play with PC) -- Portal 2 will have cross platform play, but also cross-platform ownership and other features.

This is really cool. Cross-platform play will probably be just fine in this instance because it's cooperative, not competitive so the kb+m vs. controller doesn't really ruin the fun for console players.

well until you both need to shoot a portal turn around in mid air in less than a second and be deadly accurate with the second one. I would imagine that would be a pain to play with someone on the PS3 if they were not good with a controller. But i guess that's why you play with friends eh.

don't a lot of ps3 games support kb+m though? i doubt if many people use them, but there's the option at least...

Microsoft already had cross platform game and chat near the launch of the 360 with Shadowrun, Universe at War and Lost Planet. Valve was more upset over time that Microsoft preferred a closed platform for Live, so they eventually started to work harder on PS3 implementation clearly.

I think this is awesome, I hope if helps kick start cross platform play. This needs to be a feature of next gen. But you should know that Microsoft was doing this kind of stuff in 2006 and it wasn't very successful. Many games had to utilize aim assists on the console ports so that players could keep up with PC gamers. This wasn't the right solution and Microsoft went even further to cancel a larger scale cross platform project because of it.

I really hope this takes off... because well then I wont need a console if I can still play with my friends while on my PC.

Unless something has changed, PS3 can use KB/M but the developer has to allow it -- the only game I know of that does support kb/m for gameplay is UT3 (more games allow kb chat and i think there's an MMO that allows mouse). It should be a no-brainer for valve to allow it on PS3 Portal 2.

No guarantee that Valve has managed to get PS3 games working fine, if anything they're just trying to convert users to PC with this deal. :P
