Making a new chopper - WIP

So I've been looking into Bladesports recently- you can check out their page here- http://bladesports.org/. After watching some vids on their site I was amazed at how capable these knives are. Even if you're not into Bladesports it seems like these choppers would be perfect survival/zombie/camp/utility knives. Not sure if I'll ever compete but decided to try my hand at building one. Got some time in the shop yesterday for the first time in a couple of weeks so I decided to document the process. Just in case I end up taking the plunge I am building this to Bladesports specs- here is the progress so far-

Decided to freehand draw my design on a 3 ft. piece of O-1 I had laying around-

After cutting to length and punching holes-

Drilling the holes (for anyone wondering that hole at the top is for an Osbourne lanyard setup)-

Profile ground out-

Blade ground-

Next up heat treat, I'll update the thread as I go!

I'm pretty sure I got it from flatground.com. They're one of my go to steel suppliers these days.

I watched the video on the bladesports website and 'd. I had no idea there was a group that size who created and competed in events like this. Cool, but at the same time a little crazy.

Edit: They have some sweet choppers though.

Where do you get your heat treats done and how much does it usually cost?

Yeah it's pretty crazy for sure! I had no idea this existed until a couple of weeks ago.

L33t- I do my own heat treating at home. IMO you're not really building a knife yourself unless you're bringing the steel to life with fire! Have a Paragon kiln that is more than capable of getting up to temp for this. O-1 soaks at around 1500 and I'm pretty sure the Paragon can go to 2000 with the stock controller.

Out of curiosity where are you? I wanted to to try CNC'ing some stock into blanks and the only thing I cant do here is heat treat.

I live in central OR... If you're in or around this area hit me up and we can HT some shit! If you're looking to outsource your HT to the professionals I would go either Paul Bos or Peters' Heat Treat. Both are well respected in the industry and I'm pretty sure they both offer cryo treatment as well.
